Clarissa Oakes)
I started cold on this series, but I REALLY started to like it around Book 5 (Fortune of War) as the plot arc really picks up and carries through Book 13)

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.Jeremyhttp://www.jeremygilby.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16667400.post-5216255961074669922009-09-23T15:37:18.651-04:002009-09-23T15:37:18.651-04:00It's too bad the second one is the one that dr...It's too bad the second one is the one that drags a bit. I suspect that you really have to look at the whole thing as a giant epic tale, without making a lot of distinction between one book and the next. I do like the sound of the countryside, though it seems like they should have had some more pure ocean books first. Oh well, I'll read it.OlmanFeelyushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17521657876810568251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16667400.post-86033474063550001132009-09-22T09:48:20.949-04:002009-09-22T09:48:20.949-04:00but why? is it because there are 20 of 'em? I think it's reasonable to only read the first book to at least see what it's like.

I've only read the first Harry Potter book and am happy to know that I feel no compulsion to read the rest of 'em!meezlyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09064532853057054875noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16667400.post-67112403025589556182009-09-21T20:30:49.984-04:002009-09-21T20:30:49.984-04:00Great review! I did see the excellent movie adaptation, which was apparently a combo of 3 books, actually.

interestingly, Paul Bettany will also star as Charles Darwin in the upcoming biopic 'Creation', which I'm very curious about.

yeah, I mark passages that I like as I read along - then I can go back and re-read them!meezlyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09064532853057054875noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16667400.post-88786417168079463102009-09-18T19:26:46.991-04:002009-09-18T19:26:46.991-04:00Well, nice review. It's like, well, too much talking in a porn movie. I want my sea battles. The smell of gunpowder!

I wasn't sure what to make of the Diana-Stephen-Jack love triangle. I got it, but I didn't know what point PO'B was trying to make. Sailors shouldn't try to have relationships.

But then again, there was Sophie. Patient Sophie.

And good call on the Jane Austen - the mother was another Mrs Bennett!

I am looking forward to book three.

And I just read that Russell Crowe is contemplating another Master and Commander movie based on, get this, book 11! We better get reading. Have you seen the movie "Far Side of the World?" I hear tell it's a combination of two of the books, but I don't want to do too much poking around lest I uncover spoilers by accident.

Do you pick the passages to exceprt as you read, or do you go back for the memorable, striking writing?WeSailFurtherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00682759107915210686noreply@blogger.com
